Community Involvement Teams

Community Involvement Teams (CITs) have been an important part of Levi Strauss & Co.’s Corporate Citizenship work for more than 35 years. CITs offer employees and retirees opportunities to make a difference in their communities with the encouragement and financial support of the company and the Levi Strauss Foundation. In 2005, CITs on six continents gave back to their communities by mentoring students, fundraising, supporting environment programs, teaching HIV/AIDS prevention and working with seniors among other volunteer activities. Notable CIT work for 2005 included:

Asia Pacific

  • Organizing educational tours for the Agathians Children’s Shelter in Pataling Jaya, Malaysia, to the Rimba Limu (forest of learning).
  • Designing and presenting HIV/AIDS storytelling workshops in schools, offices, and community organizations for Aide for AIDS International Inc. in Quezon City, Philippines.
  • Participating in three-day youth awareness program with AIDS Society of the Philippines in the city of Malate.
  • Working with the Bandhan organization to spread awareness of local community issues in Bangladesh.
  • Providing HIV/AIDS education in Hong Kong in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs Association.
  • Working with Community Support Concern in New Township, Pakistan, to raise funds and collect clothing donations for earthquake survivors.
  • Working with Compassion International to make infrastructure improvements in an aboriginal village in Jhongjheng District, Taiwan.
  • Visiting with and cleaning homes for seniors with Hope Worldwide Ltd. in China.
  • Providing food and educational support to homeless children in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the Dilts Foundation.
  • Planning a graduation party at the Happy Home School Day Care Center with Korea Food for the Hungry International in Gangnam-Gu, Korea.
  • Organizing a day at the zoo for children with Muscular Dystrophy through the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Singapore.

South Africa

  • Planning and conducting a day of fun and adventure with orphans and disadvantaged children from the Marsh Memorial Homes in Rondebosch, South Africa.

Canada

  • Conducting fundraising events for the Artheart Community Art Centre in Toronto, Canada.
  • Developing sale events to support the Pathways for Children, Youth & Families of York Region, inc., Markham, Canada.

Middle East

  • Painting and cleaning the Mustafa Kemal School in Silahtaraga Mah., Turkey.
  • Collecting clothes and books for an elementary school in Batman, Eastern Turkey.
  • Organizing a fundraising event for the Yesiltepe Inonu Primary School in Corlu, Turkey.

Europe

  • Mentoring and coaching youth on job skills with the Youth Center Herrenstamm, in Germany.
  • Organizing cultural programs for children from the Kiskunhalas Cultural Center in Kiskunhalas, Hungary.
  • Renovating the changing rooms of the Kiskunhalas elementary school basketball team in Kiskunhalas, Hungary.
  • Moving the Psychological Pastoral Center to a new location in Plock, Poland.
  • Creating and mending puppets used for entertaining children at the Puppet Theatre Foundation Rainbow in Kiskunhalas, Hungary.
  • Organizing a fundraising event for the Tumor Leukemia Foundation for Children in Budapest, Hungary.
  • Mentoring youth on job search skills with Unis-Cite de France, Paris, France.
  • Beautifying a shelter for single mothers in Plock, Poland.

Latin America

  • Visiting with and entertaining terminally ill patients at Arbol de la Vida in Mexico City, Mexico.
  • Painting a home for seniors with the Asociacion Cabecitas de Algodon in Esquina, Guatemala.
  • Organizing activities and entertaining disadvantaged children and their mothers with Association Third Millenium, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Painting a homeless shelter for Casa Serena (Mermaid House) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
  • Planning and helping with logistics at El Cento Escolar el Encino Hurricane Stan Distribution Center in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

United States

  • Supporting the Anti-Cruelty Society’s “Bark in the Park” event in Chicago, Illinois.
  • Washing school buses for the Benton County Sunshine Schools “Wash on Wash Off” fundraiser in Bentonville, Arkansas.
  • Providing year-long mentoring to students of Francisco middle school in San Francisco, California.
  • Building houses with Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build sites in Dallas, Texas.
  • Helping children from the Hamilton Family Center shop for new school clothes at the Mervyn’s Childspree event in San Francisco, California.
  • Preparing and selling teriyaki burgers for Kmochi, Inc. at the Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco, California.
  • Serving Mother’s Day dinner to residents at La Casa De Las Madres in San Francisco, California.
  • Organizing a picnic and socializing with Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly in San Francisco, California.
  • Collecting and donating backpacks for Mission of Hope Inc. in Knoxville, Tennessee.
  • Making sandwiches for the homes of Night Shelter for Tarrant County Ft. Worth, Texas.
  • Delivering meals year-round to AIDS patients with Project Open Hand, San Francisco, California.
  • Providing retail merchandising assistance and painting for Stand Against Domestic Violence in Concord, California.
  • Helping low-income families shop for clothing with Warm the Children, Inc. in Hebron, Kentucky.
  • Addressing fundraising letters and envelopes for Willamette Repertory Theatre in Eugene, Oregon.
  • Organizing presentations and fundraising for Earth Week Activities with Friends of the Urban Forrest in San Francisco, California.
