Assessing Our Impact: a lifecycle approach

Conducting a lifecycle assessment of a pair of Levi’s® 501® jeans revealed that the greatest environmental impacts occur at the cotton production and customer use phases. We’re addressing cotton with our leadership on the governing council of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). When it comes to customer use, we’re driving innovative educational campaigns, both at retail locations and in the customer’s home:

  • P&G Coldwater Tide & Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ :To help decrease impact at the consumer use phase, we partnered with Alliance to Save Energy and Procter & Gamble, makers of Tide Coldwater, to co-promote our Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ jeans in 1500 Walmart stores, encouraging consumers to save energy—and money—by washing their jeans in cold water.
  • Garment Care Labels: We’re changing all garment care labels on the Levi’s brand’s products. By instructing customers to wash in cold water and tumble dry medium, we encourage them to reduce their environmental and climate change impact while saving money on their utility bills.
