Logistics and the Supply Chain

Our commitment to reducing climate change impact extends far beyond our owned and operated facilities. Aware of the impact of our extended operations, we’re constantly looking for ways to extend leadership throughout our supply chain. Examining energy use in our transport logistics and global supply chain is essential to our goal of not just minimizing impacts, but restoring the environment.

  • U.S. inbound logistics. In a 2007 test-run switch to intermodal (mix of rail and truck) transport on one of our shipping routes, we realized a 47 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from reduced fuel use for transport. We’re now expanding the use of intermodal transport into other routes, capturing further cost savings and environmental benefit.
  • Supply Chain. A new information management system is currently being rolled-out to our suppliers which, when fully operational, will enable us to collect and track energy use data from our suppliers, as well as optimize our data collection efforts. This system will provide a more complete picture of our supply chain’s climate change impact and identify opportunities for policy change.
