Advocating Thoughtful Global Public Policy

Levi Strauss & Co. seeks to influence policy makers worldwide to better shape the global response to HIV/AIDS, and since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, continues to advance stigma and discrimination as issues requiring leadership attention.

  • Participated in the tripartite discussions at the International Labor Organization (ILO) that led to the adoption of the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS and the World of Work. This year, Levi Strauss continued this work and represented U.S. business at part of a U.S. delegation to the International Labor Conference to negotiate a new ILO recommendation on addressing HIV/AIDS in the World of Work.
  • Advocated at the European Parliament in a roundtable discussion that stigma and discrimination impacts communities affected by HIV/AIDS around the world.
  • In 2008, Levi Strauss & Co. CEO John Anderson joined more than 100 companies in a pledge to combat stigma and discrimination working globally to make a meaningful difference in curbing the spread of the disease.
  • Co-sponsored a first-ever human rights networking zone and march with the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and the Open Society Institute at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City to bring visibility to the human-rights concerns of people living with or at highest risk of contracting HIV.
  • Levi Strauss & Co. and Levi Strauss Foundation played significant roles in the International AIDS Conferences in Toronto in 2006 and Mexico City in 2008, presenting key workplace results, insurance discrimination findings and supporting dialogue on human rights.
  • Levi Strauss & Co. supports President Obama's commitment to launch a National HIV/AIDS Strategy in 2009 which aims to coordinate federal agencies in a concerted effort to fight the virus and the disease.
