Global Employee HIV/AIDS Program

In 2006, Levi Strauss & Co. joined with the Clinton Global Initiative to make a new commitment to revitalize and expand our employee HIV/AIDS workplace policies, education and benefits. The program provides innovative and interactive in-person and online HIV/AIDS prevention education, while striving to improve access to voluntary and confidential HIV testing, treatment and care. We hope to lead through our action and create an HIV/AIDS treatment and care model that other global apparel companies may replicate or adopt.

Components of the program include:

  • Coverage of HIV/AIDS healthcare costs: Levi Strauss & Co. employees and their dependents receive reimbursement for their HIV/AIDS testing, treatment, and care services in locations where benefits are not already covered by existing company health plans or adequately provided by public health care systems.
  • Access to testing and treatment: The program focuses on affordability, acceptability and availability of HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care services around the world. In 2008, we launched pilot projects in 3 countries (South Africa, Mexico and the UK), As a result, 80 percent of our employees in South Africa were tested for HIV and those who need it are now receiving life-saving medical treatments. Additional countries will be rolled out over the next 3 years, covering more than 40 countries around the globe.
  • Prevention Education and Training: All employees worldwide receive HIV/AIDS Education and a Directory of HIV/AIDS Services for their local country. Leaders also receive additional management training on HIV/AIDS in the workplace. Levi Strauss & Co. is piloting e-learning approaches to reach a younger workforce, with a focus on employees in the retail environment.
  • Supply chain support: Levi Strauss & Co. requires our suppliers to respect and implement HIV/AIDS nondiscrimination standards that are included in our Global Terms of Engagement. We also provide grant support to community partnerships to support workplace programs with suppliers in countries such as China, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Kenya, Lesotho and Mexico.
