Earth Day

It’s Earth Day 2013. A good day to think about the planet and our impact on it.

And consumption.

What’s a company like Levi Strauss & Co. – a company that depends upon people buying our products – doing talking about consuming?

Yes, we want you to buy our jeans and khakis and shirts and jackets.

But here’s the thing, we make these products to last. They won’t quickly fall apart or go out of fashion. Ask Maggie Meyers, who finally had to replace her favorite Levi's®…after ten years of wear.

Of 501s®, Cow Suits, and Style

On the court, he’s known as a point guard who constantly attacks the basket. Off it, Russell Westbrook makes style points. Like it or not, his approach to fashion makes a statement.

We like it.

Former NBA star Walt “Clyde” Frazier has long turned a few heads himself with his off-court dress. So it makes sense that the Levi’s® brand and ESPN would pair the two to talk style points.

I think most folks will like the way Westbrook wears his Levi’s® 501s® in Mineral Red. Reaction may be mixed to Frazier’s cow suit.

I Found My New Favorite Jean (With a Little Help)

Ten years ago, Maggie Myers bought her favorite pair of jeans at a Levi’s® store. She emailed to tell us that after so many years of rough wear, it was time to replace them.

I’d say a decade is a pretty good run for a pair of jeans – and a testament to both their craftsmanship and sustainability.

It makes sense that Maggie would turn to Levi’s® to find a new favorite jean. For her, that meant a trip to the Levi’s® store at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi, Mich., about a half-hour northwest of Detroit.

100% Authentic (And 29% Recycled Plastic)

For 140 years, the Levi’s® brand has made its 501® jean with the same care, craftsmanship and attention to detail.

To that, they’ve added recycled plastic.

The Levi’s® 501® Waste<Less™ jean is limited-edition and made exclusively for EKOCYCLE™. That’s the social movement founded by legendary musician and producer will.i.am in partnership with Coca-Cola.

Each 501® Waste<Less™ jean is made with 29% post-consumer recycled content, using an average of eight recycled plastic bottles.

Lasting Impact for All

As a community organizer for 15 years, I've worked with low-income people to influence public policies that affect their lives. I have also witnessed first-hand what an incredible difference it makes when nonprofit foundations believe in and invest in grassroots organizations and their communities.

Yep, Dockers®

On The Manual blog, Cator Sparks says that he never thought he’d write a glowing review of Dockers®. But he's done just that, one that features an interview with the brand’s Doug Conklyn, head of global design.

Sparks is one of many converts who’ve been brought around by such things as the brand's wide array of colors (khaki doesn’t have to be khaki-colored) and the Alpha collection.

Check out the post over at The Manual.

Tapping Potential for Community Prosperity

Five years ago, Veronica was living in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood and dreamed of owning a restaurant to serve her Mexico City favorites: gorditas, huaraches, and pozole. But without access to mainstream loans, starting and growing a business was virtually impossible.

That’s where Mission Asset Fund (MAF) enters the scene.

American Cool

In my book, few things are as cool as an Airstream travel trailer. The smooth, curving sheets of aluminum, riveted together and gliding down the open road to the next big adventure. Maybe at the Grand Canyon. Or a deserted Gulf Coast beach. Or Philadelphia.

Philly?

Yes, Philadelphia – the City of Brotherly Love. Home of the Liberty Bell. And this weekend, the place where a specially outfitted Airstream will house even more American cool…in the form of Dockers® khakis.
