Levi’s® Stadium Becomes First CA Stadium to Use Drought-Proof Water Source

When Levi’s® was awarded the naming rights for Levi’s® Stadium back in May 2013, we knew it was a perfect fit for so many reasons – our shared heritage with the Bay Area, our love of community and our focus on sustainability. And just a few weeks ago, we added another collective commitment to the “perfect fit list” when Levi’s® Stadium announced its latest water recycling efforts.

Levi’s® Stadium has been connected to Santa Clara’s recycled water system, making it the first stadium in California to utilize the drought-proof water source. Recycled water will account for about 85 percent of all water used in Levi’s® Stadium – setting a new standard for stadiums. It will be used for playing field irrigation, a 27,000 square foot green roof, flushing toilets, and cooling tower make-up water. Other stadiums in the U.S. are plumbed for recycled water use, but none are using it to the extent and in the myriad of ways as Levi’s® Stadium.

And the stadium’s water conservation efforts don’t stop there. Low flow water fixtures such as toilets, urinals and sinks will use 40 percent less water than conventional fixtures. The playing field also features Bermuda Bandera turf grass, which requires up to 50 percent less water than the average turf variety in the Bay Area.

We also have our fair share of experience in water recycling and conservation. As of this past spring, the Levi’s® Water<Less™ collection has saved over 770 million gallons of water (the Levi’s® Water<Less™ technique reduces the amount of water in some styles by up to 96 percent). This year we also made 100,000 pairs of Levi’s® women’s jeans with 100 percent recycled water. We encourage our fans to join us by changing their washing habits to reduce their own water usage.

We’ve seen the impact that can be made, and we’re excited to see the savings that come from the first season at Levi’s® Stadium. As a company committed to reducing our impact on the planet, we couldn’t be prouder to have our name on the stadium of an organization trying to do the same.
